Its the start of Spring
Its that time of the year when couples start planning their spring and summer weddings.
In the 2015-16 “Wedding Season” I had the honor to teach over 90 wedding couples, a Father of the Bride and two wedding parties. The songs that couples used have been as diverse as Flume, Talking Heads and Motley Crue through to Frank Sinatra, Jason Timberlake and Elton John. The inspiration for a wedding dance always comes from the music and any style of music is perfect if it means something to you both.
I have lesson times available in Tauranga during the weekend and some lunchtimes. In Auckland there are also times free during the day as well as the evenings, so if you work shift you can still have a wedding dance choreographed just for you.
From one of my couples:

Just wanted to let you know we pulled our dance off brilliantly! The guests were incredibly impressed that we’d been to dance lessons and couldn’t believe Chris picked it up so easily! We had a lot of fun and were so proud we nailed it! Thanks so much for your choreography and positive teaching. I’ve included a picture of our finale! Chris and Leah

Looking for advice for your wedding dance?
Every couple has some specific questions, however these are two of the more common ones:
How much time do we need to put in?
This depends on what exactly you want your first dance to be. If you want something that’s fairly formal, or with complicated moves or a very slick performance you will need to put aside about 3 months of weekly lessons. If you want something a little more casual you could set aside 4-6 weeks. If you just want a few simple moves you could have just one lesson.
You do need to be able to practice between lessons too. Not hours and hours, but enough so each lesson can build on what you both already know. Practice also gets rid of the need to count, look down and all those things that will make you look unconfident.
When should we start?
Its a good idea to have your choreography done at least 2 weeks before the big day if you can – then you have less to stress about. You can also learn your choreographed wedding dance well in advance and come back for a final run through in the week before their wedding – and that works well for some couples.

Its official

Dance Company has found a great Tauranga venue for wedding couple lessons. Auckland lessons still continue in Panmure and Kingsland.
Studio162 ( at 162 Durham St, Tauranga) meets all the requirements for wedding couple lessons. The venue is easy to find, with great off street parking. The studio we are working from is small, most wedding venues don’t have large spaces available for your first dance, with a wooden floor and mirrors. Its also private, so the doors will be closed and there wont be people watching when you have your lesson.
Limited numbers of private lessons for couples are now available on late Sunday afternoon into the early evening.
Elly usually teaches around 90 wedding couples a year and each couple has had their own choreography. The songs that couples have used have been as diverse as Motley Crue, Talking Heads and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers through to Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra and Elle Goulding, wedding party flash mobs to salsa, tango, chacha, modern and Viennese waltzes.

“Elly was amazing to work with. She put my rather reluctant husband at ease from our very first lesson (Like a lot of men, Sol had never partner danced before) and made the whole process easy and most importantly fun. I would highly recommend Elly for any couple wanting to impress the guests at their wedding.”
Kirsty and James

James and Kirsty are Auckland Wedding Showcase finalists: http://www.aucklandweddings.co.nz/showcase/kirsty-and-james-
They say that learning their first dance was one one of their top 3 wedding moments:
“We wanted to make our first dance special so we went for 6 lessons with Elly at The Dance Company. She was incredible – she managed to give me more confidence and James his chance to have fun with a choreographed dance to INXS Never Tear Us Apart… not your standard choice but it meant a lot to us! With the chaos that came in the 2 weeks preceding the wedding, we hardly had a chance to practise but we manage to pull it off and had a lot of fun!”

Please don’t think you have to already know how to partner dance to have a Wedding/First dance.
A few months ago I had a wonderful woman email me and say:
“I feel very uncomfortable dancing and have said to my partner, I will get some lessons and if I still cant get it, we probably wont be having a first dance at all”
I arranged a chat with her and her partner and we set up some lesson times. After their first lesson, last week, I received the following:
Hi Elly,
Thank you so much for your patience and making us feel relaxed and comfortable at our first lesson, I’m looking forward to the next one 🙂
Jacqueline
I was so pleased. They have chosen a great song to dance to and they will look wonderful on the day.
I’m teaching in Tauranga and in Auckland, so if you want to discuss what you want on your wedding day please contact me Elly (027 215 1430) or hi@dancecompany.co.nz

Looking to learn how to partner dance?

Its winter so its a great time to stay inside and learn to dance.
I have some evening times free for private lessons in Panmure or Kingsland. Private lessons are a great way to gain confidence and learn some of the useful basics.
Classes will cover:
· Basic lead/follow techniques
· How to hear the music
· How to dance and have fun
I teach in small studios so you don’t need to worry about being seen by others and we can use the music you like.
If you want to learn with your partner thats fine, if you want to learn by yourself thats great too.
