Jo and Ian
In February Jo and Ian performed their wedding dance. They danced to “Can’t take my eyes off you” by Andy Williams.

They started their 6 lesson block in December to allow for Christmas and the holiday period, and wedding organisational busy-ness. This also meant when Jo need some time out to get over a gym injury there was time available. I recommend having your choreography done two weeks before your wedding date (if you can) to allow for the unforeseen to happen.
For all wedding dances the gown will play a large part in determining what moves work best. Not all moves suit every song, every wedding dress or even the floor you will be dancing on. I always ask if you have any moves/variations that you do want to do and if necessary modify them so they can be used.
Not all wedding dances take 6 weeks. Some couples want to feel confident dancing a few moves in public and others want something a little more complex. If you are looking for a First Dance/Wedding dance lets talk about what you want your first dance to be.

Looking for advice for your wedding dance?
While every couple will have some specific questions below are two of the more common ones:
How much time do we need to put in?
This depends on what exactly you want your first dance to be. If you want something that’s fairly formal, or with complicated moves or a very polished performance you will need to put aside about 2-3 months of weekly lessons. If you want something a little more casual you could set aside 4-6 weeks. If you just want a few simple moves you could have just one lesson.
You do need to be able to practice between lessons too. Not hours and hours, but enough so each lesson can build on what you both already know.
When should we start?
Its a good idea to have your choreography done at least 2 weeks before the big day if you can – then you have less to stress about. You can also learn your choreographed wedding dance well in advance and come back for a final run through in the week before your wedding – and that works well for some couples.
Do consider booking your wedding dance lessons in advance, as that means one less thing to worry about closer to the actual day plus you are more likely to be able to have the lesson time and venue that suits you best.

Jess and Sol
Early this year Jess and Sol performed their wedding dance. This photo typified the fun we all had putting together “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen.

This is the last move they did in their routine and it works well with her soft dress and their music choice. Check out the faces of the audience in the background, they didn’t see this coming.
For all wedding dances your music choice determines what style of dance is best and in some cases it also means a little more effort is needed to learn some specific moves/variations, such as the move above. Not all moves suit every song, every wedding dress or even the floor you will be dancing on. Its always best to dance to a song that means something to you both and leave the choreography to me. I will always ask if you have any moves/variations that you do want to do and if possible incorporate them into something special for you.
I am fully booked now for February, however there is still some times free in March if you are looking for a little help with your wedding dance, even just a single lesson.

2015 – Its been an amazing year for dance
This year I have had the honor to teach a wonderful group of couples their First Dance/Wedding Dance. Their music choices have been amazing. Its always best to dance to a song that means something to you both or one that has suitable lyrics. I’ve been introduced to some new artists too, and been able to create something fresh and new to music I’ve been asked to choreograph to before.
My Classical Sequence competition couples and singles have also done very well. A new couple to the style took 5 out of 6 possible New Zealand titles in 2015. It would be wonderful to have more dancers taking on this type of sequence dancing.
I am now closed for the Christmas break. I’m back teaching on the 5th of January if you are looking for just a single lesson or a little help with your wedding dance.

Finally December and some sunny weather
If you are getting married later in December or January and have decided to have just a few lessons I do have some evening times free if you want some help with your wedding dance.
I am also teaching in Kingsland during the lunchtimes which is working well for some couples.
I received the following from one of my current clients:
“Thanks again for last night, Ben and I said in the car last night that the lessons has been by far our most favourite part of organising the wedding.” Ben & Nat
Sadly, this is the last month I will be teaching in the East Tamaki studio as it is closing, however I will continue to teach in Panmure and Kingsland.
Dance Company will be closing on Wednesday 23rd and will be back teaching on Tuesday the 5th of January.
